Jones of Wales Clan Badge

Category :

For those of you who are not familiar with Clan Badges, they were (are) used to identify members of a clan or family. They are most often worn on caps by clan chieftains, however, they can also be worn as broaches to hold kilts in place. I searched high and low for a Jones Clan Badge. But the simple fact is, the Jones' aren't Scottish.

Below are some of the renderings I have made. Please feel free to create your own, I would love to see what you can come up with.

The Makeup of a Clan Badge

The Garter and Buckle:

The pair symbolize the allegiance to a particular clan. The clan motto is usually inscribed around the circumference. More often than not, the motto is in the native tongue. In the case of the Jones' of Wales, it is in Welsh.
The Crest:

The Crest is the prominent feature of a clan badge. Although, more ancient crests were of flowers, animals such as the lion often adorn the clans coat-of-arms.

The Tartan:

Although, not typically a part of the Clan Badge, the tartan also recognizes rival families. This Jones Tartan is a more recent addition to the Tartan Registry. I have included it here as a decorative background.

Jones of Wales Clan Badge

Our Badge:

Here is my rendering of what I believe the Jones Clan Badge would have looked like (if we were Scottish).

I was able to create this in only a few hours time, and must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You will notice that I have included the Jones of Wales family motto "Heb Dduw, Heb Ddim, Duw a Digon" which translates to "Without God, Without Anything, God is Enough."

I have also, chosen to use the Tartan colors within the badge to add to the symmetry between the two icons.

Please feel tree to download and copy images from this article. I only ask that you give reference back to my site if posted.

How would the motto be spelled phoneticly ? Not knowing any Welsh I can't begin to know how to say that motto in English.

I'd post a link to this page but I'm having a tattoo made out of your design. (I guess I could get a QR code tattoo)
I've got a bunch of actual Scottish lines that I'm doing on my right leg. This allows me to include my Jones line on that leg as well. Besides that, it's just bad ass. Thanks for doing this.

I thought the motto/war cry was just the first two parts, and the meaning is not a strict translation: "We have God, we need nothing else!" I'll check with a friend who studied Welsh Gaelic here and was tutored in Wales for another month. I'd like to modify this badge for a tattoo (cause I'm almost 60, my son is away at university, and my husband has given up trying to stop me from doing crazy things). Can I compensate you to avoid copyright infringement? (My husband's a music producer; we don't steal stuff and copying off a website is stealing. It's so hard to get people to understand that, esp the youngin's)
